How much do the songs cost?

Nobex Radio adds nothing to the price. You only pay what 7Digital, Amazon.com, iTunes or other stores charge for the songs. And you only pay when you actually buy songs - Nobex Radio does not charge you for anything.

Top of list

But I don't buy songs to listen to on my BlackBerry or on my phone. I listen to songs on my iPod (or other MP3 player).

We know that. That's why Nobex Radio gives you a way to buy the song from your PC and add it to your MP3 player, just like you always do. Even if you are away from your PC when you hear the song on the radio.

Top of list

Why are only some stations playable?

To be able to play a station, Nobex Radio needs to be able to connect to the station's stream, and the stream should be of a supported format. In addition, we make sure that the quality of the stream is good, to provide a great listening experience. Not all stations pass all those criteria. We keep adding stations to the list of playable stations, so feel free to request a station on our Station Wiki page. In addition, it always helps to tell your requested station about us.

I do not have WiFi. Nobex Radio tries to connect using the mobile network, but it does not work. How do I set it up?

First, please be aware that streaming radio is data intensive. We recommend you do so over the mobile network only if you have an unlimited data plan.

To stream over the mobile network, your TCP connection should be set up per the settings of your mobile service provider. To check the settings, go to the 'Options' icon, then select 'Advanced Options', then 'TCP'. Check with your mobile service provider what the required settings are (and please confirm with them that you have a nice data plan). You can also see TCP settings on the following websites: ModMyi.com and Pinstack.

Top of list

Why are some of the stations not playable?

There are two types of stations in Nobex Radio.
Playable stations - these are stations to which you can listen using the device. For these, we are able to stream the radio over the wireless data channel to the device.

Other stations are not playable. Either they do not stream their broadcast, or they stream it in a format the device does not support yet. For these, we display the playlist information, so that if you listen to them at home, office or car (using a regular radio), you can see what is playing, and then use one of our cool features to get the song, listen to a snippet, see the lyrics, learn about the artist or song.

Top of list

I click play, and I do not hear anything. How do I solve it?

There are a few potential reasons for not hearing a playable station.

First - make sure that the device is not set up to play through the headset or bluetooth. Also - sometimes it just takes time (up to a minute) until the device connects to the stream and buffers enough data to start playing. Notice the arrows at the top right corner - if you see data getting to the device, you might want to wait a bit more to see if the stream arrives.

Another reason for not hearing a station might be the inability of the device to connect to the stream - this in most cases is due to wrong TCP settings. Please read above on TCP settings.

And, one last potential reason for not hearing a station is if the station stream location has changed, and we do not yet know about it. If you think this is the case, please send us a note.

What devices does Nobex Radio run on?

Nobex Radio runs on all BlackBerry models. It requires BlackBerry OS 4.2 and higher.

Top of list

I'm trying to use Nobex Radio on my BlackBerry but I get a screen that tells me that it "could not connect to its servers. Please verify that you have a working wireless connection."

Nobex Radio needs to be able to connect to its servers via the Internet, to get updated song info. There are many causes which may prevent Nobex Radio from accessing the Internet. If you get this message, the first thing to do is make sure you have a working wireless connection to the Internet by opening the Browser and seeing if it is working. If so, then common causes for failure are (1) using an inappropriate connection method and (2) a lack of permissions. See the next two items for details.

Top of list

When setting up Nobex Radio, it offers me to change the "Connection Method". What is this and why should I change it?

The BlackBerry handheld connects to the Internet via an Internet access point. Nobex Radio allows you to select the appropriate access point for your BlackBerry account by selecting an appropriate Connection Method. By default, this setting is set to "Auto". As such Nobex Radio will attempt to pick the appropriate method based on your handheld configuration. If you are unable to connect to the Internet, you may wish to manually select which method to use by changing the Connection Method.

Currently Nobex Radio supports the following connection methods:

1. BES - This is the recommended setting for users with a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) account.
2. BIS - This is the recommended setting for users with a BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) account.
3. Carrier TCP - This is an alternate method provided by some carriers.

Important Note: If you select "Carrier TCP", you must verify with your carrier that this service is provided. Your carrier will provide you with an "APN", "Username" and "Password", which must be entered in the TCP screen accessed via the BlackBerry Options / Advanced Options screen. Some carriers may charge extra for using this method.

Top of list

When setting up Nobex Radio, I get a screen with a red border saying that it "could not connect to its servers because it has been denied Internet access. Please grant Internet access via your handheld settings or contact your administrator for assistance." What should I do?

On the handheld, go to BlackBerry Options / Advanced Options / Applications, and highlight "Nobex Radio". While highlighted, select "Edit Permissions" from the menu. Expand "Connections" and set the necessary connections to "Allow" (e.g., Company Network, Carrier Internet, Wi-Fi).

If you are using a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server), you also need to make sure your IT policy grants you Internet access. Contact your BES administrator for assistance.

Why does Nobex Radio need my email address?

When you ask for a song, Nobex Radio sends you an email with links that point to that song and its album on Amazon.com and on iTunes, so that you can buy it with one click. This is why it needs your email address. Your email address is safe - it will not be used for anything not related to Nobex Radio, and it will not be passed on to any other company.

Top of list

How do I set which stations I want to see?

When you install Nobex Radio, it comes preset with two stations. To add a station to your station list just select "Add Station" from the main menu. You can either add a station by selecting it from the complete list (by location), or by searching specifically for a playable station and selecting it by its genre. You can add up to 20 stations to "My Stations".

Does Nobex Radio only show songs playing on radio stations in the U.S.?

Nobex Radio works with over 2,700 radio stations throughout the U.S. and Canada. We also have radio stations in other locations around the world. We are working on bringing you playlist information for international stations too.

What do I do with the email with the song details that Nobex Radio sent me?

The links work from your PC, and not yet directly from your BlackBerry. You can purchase songs directly from your BlackBerry through the "Get Song" option.

What if I clicked "Get It!" by mistake on a song I do not want?

The radio stops playing when the screen goes off

This can happen if you are playing radio over a WiFi network. One of the settings for WiFi is whether it should turn off when the screen goes off. Go to Settings - Wireless and Networks - WiFi Settings and click the Advanced menu option. Then select the WiFi Sleep Policy item, and select either the "Never" or "Never when plugged in" option. This will make WiFi not turn off when the screen goes off, and radio playing will continue.
